During the military operations in Afghanistan in 2001, some soldiers of the elite unit of the German Bundeswehr KSK painted a slightly modified emblem of the Afrika Korps on military equipment. The same pattern was seen on several other machines.
The scandal erupted after the photograph fell into the hands of German journalists. Thomas Raabe, spokesman for the German Ministry of Defense, said that from the published photo it cannot be argued that this is the emblem of the Afrika Korps, and that this vehicle is from the Bundeswehr. However, Raabe promised that the Ministry would investigate the incident to find out why the tree was painted on the car door in the first place.
